Bike Powered Film Premier!

Free UK Bike Powered Film Premier at Essex University, May 4th

The Lakes at The University of Essex will be transformed into a giant outdoor cinema on May 4th to host a free, UK premier of 'Home', the internationally acclaimed film from Earth From the Air's Yann Arthus-Bertrand. The Film will start at 8:30pm.

The event is a collaboration between the grass-roots group - Transition Town Wivenhoe, Essex University and the Student Union Environmental Committee.

"This promises to be a memorable occasion featuring a unique bicycle powered cinema, an awe-inspiring film and a beautiful setting by the lakes." said Marie-Lousie from the Student Environment Society, "All are welcome, bringing a rug or chair to sit on is recommended"

So I was wondering if anyone out there is interested in chewing the fat and getting to grips with some of the finer points of this whole Transition Town thing?
There have been various discussions as to the format the TTC meetings take, whether they should be down the pub type get togethers or whether they should be formal meetings following the proper procedures and what not. Well so far its been very formal and very productive, however it is becoming increasingly apparent that there is room for both, that actually we probably need both in order to generate and keep enthusiasm and to build momentum.
So what say you all? How about Wednesday 4th May at 7.30 in The George?

I was wondering if anyone out there knows where I might be able to find some Ramsons, wild garlic, growing locally, in or near Colchester?
I would also like to take this opportunity to invite anyone who is interested in foraging for wild food to share their knowledge (and maybe even their secrets!) with the rest of us. For instance I have noticed that down by the river just past some allotments ('the Heath' I think people call it) there is an abundance of wormwood artemesia absinthium.
It would also be great to get an idea of local fruit trees which go unpicked and uncared for year after year, there must be hundreds around! Part of the process of creating a more resilient Colchester will be to take stock of what we've got, and wild, free food is a nice little way to start me thinks.....

Bicycle Powered Cinema - The Incredibles

Transition Wivenhoe's Bicycle Powered Cinema in association with The Station Pub and with kind support from Moving Image is very, very pleased to be showing a free, giant, outdoor screening of Pixar's animated blockbuster...

Sunday 17th April 8pm @ The Station Pub car park

The film starts at 8pm, but the super-heroes from Transition Wivenhoe will be there from 7:00 setting up and saving the day with:

Supersmoothies from using local produce and a bicycle powered blender

Test your pedalling super-powers against the dastardly watt-what machine

The fiendish Dr Bike will make an appearance too, with free check-ups for your bicycle before the film

Bring a fold-up seat for maximum comfort. No Capes.

Park and Ride in for Planning

The long awaited park and ride scheme for North Colchester is a step closer after a planning application was lodged.

The £3 million scheme will include parking for up to 1,000 cars, a terminal building and new bus priority measures along the route.

The site, based at Cuckoo Farm, will be accessed from the new A12 junction 28, which was opened at the end of last year.

The service could come into operation by the end of 2012.

It is hoped a £9 million link road, connecting the junction and Northern Approach Road, will be completed by the end of 2012 to coincide with the opening of the park and ride.

What is Transition Town Colchester about?

You may not have heard about Transition Town Colchester, and more than likely you won't know what we are about...so here is the simple version.....

“For all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly rebuild resilience to mitigate the effects of fossil fuel depletion - Peak Oil, and drastically reduce carbon emissions to mitigate the effects of Climate Change?”

Many people in Colchester are helping to build an exciting and sustainable future for us all: developing community gardens; growing more food locally; garden sharing; generating renewable energy; establishing bee-hives; reducing car dependency, and so on.

People are beavering away energetically with their own projects but how often do they get the chance to come together and meet with others who are like-minded.? We certainly don’t wish to dilute the good work you’re doing but we feel there’s scope for bringing people together under an umbrella organization – Transition Town Colchester (TTC) - as a way of discovering what areas of common ground we have and for sharing ideas and stimulating other projects. Ideas already coming forward include mapping “orphan” fruit trees, finding land that could be used for growing more food or siting more bee-hives.

We’d very much like to hear your views on this.
